How to Wash Delicates: Lingerie, Silk, Lace & More
LaundroMaps Team
Delicate fabrics like silk, lace, and lingerie need special handling to avoid damage. Machine washing delicates is possible — you just need the right settings and a mesh laundry bag. Here's how to wash delicates safely.
What Counts as "Delicates"?
- Silk blouses and scarves
- Lace items (bras, underwear, camisoles)
- Lingerie and hosiery
- Cashmere and fine wool knits
- Sheer fabrics and chiffon
- Anything with beading, sequins, or embroidery
- Items labeled "Gentle Wash" or "Hand Wash" — check our laundry symbols guide
Machine Washing Delicates
- Place items in a mesh laundry bag. This prevents snagging, stretching, and tangling with other items. Use separate bags for bras (to protect underwires).
- Select the delicate or gentle cycle. This uses slower agitation and spin speeds.
- Use cold water only. Hot or warm water damages delicate fibers and can cause shrinking.
- Use a mild or delicate-specific detergent. Regular detergent can be too harsh. A small amount goes a long way.
- Skip fabric softener. It coats delicate fibers and can break down elastic over time.
Hand Washing Delicates
For the most fragile items:
- Fill a basin with cool water and a small amount of gentle detergent
- Submerge the item and gently swish for 2-3 minutes — don't wring or twist
- Drain and refill with clean cool water to rinse
- Gently press out excess water between clean towels
- Lay flat to dry — never hang delicates, as gravity stretches wet fabric
Drying Delicates
Never put delicates in the dryer unless the care label specifically says it's safe. Heat and tumbling damage delicate fabrics. Instead:
- Lay flat on a clean, dry towel
- Reshape the garment while damp
- Air dry away from direct sunlight (UV fades colors)
- Flip halfway through drying for even results
At a laundromat, use the gentle cycle on the smallest machine available, and bring your items home to air dry rather than using the commercial dryer.
